Exploring Toowong Cemetery

  • Enter only between 6am–6pm.
  • Walk carefully — look out for machinery and subsided graves.
  • Don’t stand on graves or under monuments.
  • Don’t lean on headstones.

Volunteering with Friends of Toowong Cemetery

  • You must register at volunteering events or you will not be covered by our public liability insurance.
  • Always follow instructions from Friends of Toowong Cemetery members.
  • You must follow the Safety Instructions and Gravesite Care Instructions.

Gravesite Care Instructions Summary:

✅ DO

  • Take photographs before and after any work.
  • Check for unstable, cracked or damaged monuments and report concerns before starting work.
  • Test any cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • Use clean water, soft brushes and mild or neutral detergents only.
  • Weed and tidy graves carefully.
  • Leave historic stone, metalwork, kerbing, railings and memorials in place and protect them from damage while working.

❌ DON'T

  • Don't use pressure washers, water blasting or abrasive cleaning methods.
  • Don't use wire brushes or power tools.
  • Don't use acids, bleach-based cleaners, caustic products or harsh chemicals.
  • Don't paint, re-cut, trace or fill engraved inscriptions.
  • Don't paint surfaces that aren't already painted.
  • Don't move, remove or alter headstones, grave markers, railings, kerbing or historic metalwork.
  • Don't over-clean or remove historic metal patinas and finishes.

Friends of Toowong Cemetery volunteer activities work under a General Exemption Certificate: Queensland Heritage Places from the Queensland Government and will comply with all applicable requirements, including:

The Friends of Toowong Cemetery is a community of people who share a passion for discovering stories, preserving heritage, and helping others connect with Queensland's past.

As a member, you are expected to:

  • Support the association's work and contribute to its activities and objectives.
  • Share discoveries and knowledge, and help preserve the cemetery's heritage in ways that benefit current and future generations.
  • Conduct yourself in a way that supports the reputation, interests, and values of the association.
  • Treat fellow members with courtesy and respect and seek to resolve disagreements constructively.
  • Use association information and resources responsibly.
  • Maintain your membership and keep your contact details and membership fees up to date.

Every member contributes in their own way. Whether researching a story, sharing knowledge, supporting events, caring for heritage, or simply encouraging others to value the cemetery's history, your involvement helps keep Toowong Cemetery's heritage and stories alive for future generations.
