THE NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF QUEENSLAND.
We understand that James Cockle, Esq., of the Middle Temple and Midland Circuit, Barrister-at-Law, has been selected by Sir Roundell Palmer (we believe, upon the recommendation of Chief Justice Erle and other high judicial authorities) to be the first Chief Justice of Queensland. In compliance with the recommendation of his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, and in the spirit of the resolutions passed by the Queensland Parliament in the session of 1862, the choice was left absolutely to Sir Roundell Paleor, the present Solicitor-General of England, whose character as a scholar and statesman, as well as a lawyer, is well known. Mr. Cockle was to leave England by the overland mail of December, so he may be expected to assume his office about the middle of February. Mr. Cockle is a Master of Arts of Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took honors of the highest class, having been a Wrangler. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and of the Cambridge Philosophical Society. He is a practising barrister of above sixteen years' standing. We understand that the new Chief Justice is married, and has a family.
