A Serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon, causing the death of one man and the injury of another. The man who was killed is named Edward Lewthwaite, a laboring man resident in South Brisbane, and the circumstances attending the occurrence as far as we can learn are as follow:- Mr Reading, the contractor, was carrying out for Mr. D. L. Brown the raising and removal of a wooden house, situated at the residence of Mr. D. L. Brown, Bowen Bridge road. In this work four men were engaged, the deceased being one. The edifice had been raised by means of the proper appliances from the piles on which it rested, when, owing to some unexplained cause, it fell asunder, and one of the joists fell upon Lewthwaite's back, breaking it, and causing almost instantaneous death. A man named Tucker also I received severe injuries from some of the falling timber. Dr Bancroft was at once sent for, and arrived as promptly as possible. His aid was, of course, unavailing in Lewthwaite's case, but he at once attended to the injuries of Tucker, which were not considered of a dangerous character. After his wounds had been dressed properly he was removed to the hospital. Lewthwaite, who was a native of Coventry, England, was, we believe, a hard working steady man, and leaves a wife and three children.

THE UNDERSIGNED beg to ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT of SUBSCRIPTIONS amounting to £14 14s., in aid of the family of Edward Linthwaite, who was accidentally killed by the falling of Mr. D. L. Brown's house.
