DOWNS MEMOIRS
(By "Gooragooby," Dalveen.)Mr. Harry Beauchamp-Unwin, son of one of the members of the well-known London banking family of that name, some, 60 or 70 years ago, held a small interest in the Warwick Argus newspaper for a brief period in 1870-71, re-tiring from same shortly after the rush, to the Stanthorpe tin mines set in, and subsequently became part proprietor of the Quart Pot Creek news paper. He died on August 5, 1874, whilst in South Brisbane, and on the 29th of the same month a strange matter cropped up in reference to the affairs of the departed Harry B. Unwin. On his death his Stanthorpe partner, Mr. J. W. Pillar, was requested to examine his papers with a view to locating Unwin's will, but after careful examination nothing was to be found, and the curator of intestate estates then took charge. Mr. Raff ordered that his effects be sold. Whilst removing a quantity of furniture, including a chest of drawers, on to a dray, there was found among a lot of rubbish, a small box in the chest, of drawers, which on being forced open was found to contain a host of papers, deeds, etc., together with a will dated 1870. The will appointed Mr. Jas. Morgan (the late Sir Arthur's father) and Dr. Fuller, of Warwick, his executors. The whole of Unwin's property was left to his mother in England. Deceased was understood to be heir to considerable property to the Home land. The Stanthorpe newspaper then passed entirely into the hands of Mr. J. W. Pillar, he having purchased the interests of his late partner (Mr. H. B. Unwin). Mr. Pillar has long since followed his partner of the early seventies, and only a few months since Mrs. J. W. Pillar also set out on the long journey.
