DEATHS.
THOMAS.—On the 4th July, at his residence, Captain H. J. Thomas, late of H.M. 87th Fusiliers, in the 54th year of his age.
Yesterday evening, an inquest on the body of Mr. H. J. Thomas, better known as Captain Thomas, was held at Fairfield-house. The deceased died suddenly, from the effects, it is stated, of a dose of arsenic. The evidence adduced showed that the deceased had been for some time past suffering very much from mental anxiety, which lately caused him to take to drink. He went out on Monday night, apparently in his usual health, and returned about 4 a.m. yesterday the worse of liquor, and went to bed. About 8 o'clock he got up, and went out. On his return, Mrs. Thomas tried to induce him to take some breakfast, and after wards made him go again to bed. He then had some conversation with the servant girl, during which he swallowed something which he stated was arsenic. In a short time he became very ill, and Drs. Bell and Lansdown were called in, but, notwithstanding all that medical skill could devise, he died about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The inquest will be resumed at 2 o'clock this afternoon, it having been adjourned for the purpose of obtaining further medical testimony.
