INQUESTS.
Jemima Mercer was a young woman in the service of Mr. McLellan, publican, of Fortitude Valley. She met with her death on Friday afternoon, and the inquest was held on Saturday. The witnesses examined were Dr. Hobbs, Thomas Frederick Harrison, and a little girl named Mclvor. It appeared that the horse of a man named Robert Simpson was hanging at the fence at half-past seven o'clock, and the last witness and deceased each had a ride upon it — one leading for the other. After some time deceased became bolder and requested the girl to let go. She did so, and the horse went off in a slow canter. The accident was not seen by any one ; but Harrison, hearing a scream, ran down the road, and found her body lying bleeding on the ground. She neither spoke nor moved after. Dr. Hobbs deposed that no fracture of the skull was evident, but he had no doubt she came to her death by falling on the crown of her head, and that the base of the skull had been fractured. A verdict was given accordingly.
